Thousands of England Resident Doctors Launch Six-Day Pay Strike

(MENAFN) Thousands of resident doctors across England launched a six-day strike on Tuesday amid an ongoing pay dispute with the government.

The industrial action, marking the 15th round of strikes, began at 7 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) and will continue until 7 a.m. on Monday, April 13.

The British Medical Association (BMA) confirmed last month that its Resident Doctors Committee had turned down Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s latest offer of a 3.5% pay increase after weeks of discussions.

In a statement issued April 1, the association stressed that the strike could still be avoided if the government returned with a “credible offer” addressing pay and working conditions.

“We remain willing and available to re-enter negotiations, but we are not willing to risk locking in further pay erosion,” the BMA said.

The association added that the government’s last-minute change in its pay stance left doctors with “no option but to make ourselves heard from the picket line.”

Meanwhile, National Health Service England advised patients to seek medical care as needed during the strike, cautioning that disruptions could occur.

“This strike is expected to be particularly challenging due to the shorter notice period,” it said Monday.
