Thousands of English Resident Doctors Start Six-Day Pay Strike

(MENAFN) Thousands of resident doctors across England launched a six-day strike on Tuesday in an ongoing dispute with the government over pay, according to reports.

The walkout, the 15th round of industrial action, began at 7 am local time (0600GMT) and will continue until 7 am on Monday, April 13.

Last month, the British Medical Association (BMA) said its Resident Doctors Committee rejected Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s latest offer of a 3.5% pay increase after weeks of discussions. In an April 1 statement, the association noted that the government could still prevent the strike by returning with a “credible offer” on pay and working conditions.

“We remain willing and available to re-enter negotiations, but we are not willing to risk locking in further pay erosion,” the BMA said. The group added that the government’s last-minute change on pay left doctors with “no option but to make ourselves heard from the picket line.”

The National Health Service England urged patients not to postpone seeking care during the strike, noting that “this strike is expected to be particularly challenging due to the shorter notice period.”
