BURUNDI, November 21, 2023 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Village Health Works has received a transformational gift of $5 million from Yield Giving upon opening the Kigutu Hospital and Women's Health Pavilion (WHP). The WHP is an 85,000-square-foot teaching hospital, the first of its kind in Burundi. Now a peaceful country, Burundi is still recovering from 12 years of civil war, which has profoundly impacted the current conditions for its citizenry. With a predominantly rural population of 12.8 million people, the vast majority of Burundians live in extreme poverty and have little, if any, access to quality health care. The conditions in Burundi disproportionately impact women and children, especially girls.

WHP focuses on caring for women and children, providing services in primary health care, obstetrics and gynecology, neonatology, and pediatrics. In addition, the WHP will offer emergency and general surgery, mental health services, malnutrition screening and outreach, and specialty services in fields such as ophthalmology. In addition to being a teaching hospital, WHP will provide radiology and pathology laboratory testing, both new services in the Burundian healthcare system, leading to faster diagnosis and treatment of patients.

"Yield Giving has provided Village Health Works with a critical opportunity to stabilize health services to a diverse community of over 200,000 people in neglected rural areas in Burundi, one of the most forgotten countries on this planet. This gift will help thousands upon thousands of women who will now safely deliver their babies - they will not die in childbirth because of lack of care. It will help their children who, with compassionate support, will grow up healthier, better fed, and better educated, to be able to take their rightful place in the leadership of their country."
